Intent

Mastery of mathematics is the aim for our children at Hackbridge Primary School.

We have implemented a Teaching for Mastery approach across our school. We are within a sustaining Teacher Research Group, led by the NCETM.

We believe that no one is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at maths. We have developed a growth mind-set at our school. Like speaking, we are all born with an innate ability to enjoy and succeed at mathematics. We want to:
• Inspire children to develop a passion for mathematics.
• Nurture future mathematicians who will take up jobs in STEM subjects.
• Provide opportunities to develop problem-solving skills useful for maths and across the curriculum.

Five big ideas – teaching for mastery

We centre our curriculum around the following five big ideas:

• Coherance - small steps of learning, planned in a coherant way

• Representation and structure

• Variation

• Fluency

• Mathematical thinking

Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach

We follow a Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach to mathematics. Children are moved between concrete objects (physical objects children can touch), pictorial (images which represent these physical objects) and abstract representations (numbers and symbols). Teachers move children through the three areas of concrete, pictorial and abstract mathematics (CPA).

Year groups have access to: Maths no Problem textbooks and workbooks as guidance; NCETM Professional Development materials, NCETM Spines and NCETM curriculum maps, Deepening Understanding, NumberSense, TTRockstars, Numberblocks, Sumdog, PiXL Times Tables app to support fluency, problem solving and reasoning. Nursery setting has access to Maths Champions. Reception has access to Mastering Number.

All children have access to concrete apparatus when appropriate.

Teachers craft lessons carefully to match models to the manipulatives on offer.

Resources 

We use Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com), Big Maths (www.bigmaths.com), SumDog (www.sumdog.com/sch/hackbridge) and PiXL Times Tables App (https://timestable.pixl.org.uk/) to improve fluency.

Objectives

The objectives sheets for each year group show what your children will be learning over the year. They are grouped in areas and is not organised by when they will be learning each area.
