General Information

Located within walking distance of local train stations and bus routes, Spencer Nursery School is a local authority maintained nursery school with additional private childcare provision for children under five. Places operate on an all year round basis (for 51 weeks of the year). We are committed to delivering high-quality affordable childcare and education.

Spencer Nursery School was originally built in 1946 and has provided education on the same site ever since. In 2004, the site was extended and refurbished to enable us to extend our provision to also provide childcare and education for children under 3 years of age.

School Structure

Our pupil place capacity is as follows:

• Ladybirds - 12 full day places per day for 0-2 year olds; all places are 8am-6pm
• Bumblebees - 12 full day places per day for 2-3 year olds; all places are 8am-6pm
• Fireflies - 24 full day places per day for 3 and 4 year olds; 8 of these places are 8am-4pm and 16 of the places are 8am-6pm

All places are for all year round attendance and we do not offer any term time only nursery places at Spencer Nursery School.

The provision of Childcare and Education

At Spencer Nursery School, there is a seamless provision between the childcare and education that we provide to children, whatever age they start with us. Our team of Early Years Educators work a pattern of early and late shifts to ensure that adults that the children know are present for every part of their daily routine in the Nursery.

Each day begins with breakfast for all children before a variety of activities, utilising both our indoor and outdoor spaces, begin. Our staff team ensures that children are engaged in purposeful play, as well as engaging with opportunities for new learning. Snack time, lunchtime and tea time (for those staying beyond 4pm each day) are also part of the daily routine delivered by our Early Years Educators.

For children in our Ladybirds (0-2 years) room and our Bumblebees (2-3 years) room, the staff also work with parents/carers to agree individual sleep times.

Our Nursery Manager oversees the provision in Ladybirds and Bumblebees, as well as the Fireflies room during non-term time weeks.

Our Nursery teacher is responsible for the provision in Fireflies (3-4 years) during term time.

Security

We take security very seriously at Spencer Nursery School. All doors to the highway are protected by digital locks and we have a CCTV system.

All visitors coming into the school buildings, including parents, must use the front door and sign in and out at the school office using the computerised inVentry system. Visitors who have an up to date DBS certificate are asked to register the details with the school office. All helpers within school have police clearance in line with DBS guidelines. Visitors who do not have a DBS check are not left alone on the school premises.
